Artificial Sweeteners – Friend or Foe?

Am I the only one who remembers back in the day when NutraSweet came out?? There were warnings EVERYWHERE not to give it to your kids, not to use if you were pregnant, etc because it would cause BRAIN DAMAGE! Now, you are lucky if you can find a product that doesn’t have an artificial sweetener in it, right down to medications and toothpaste. People wake up! Artificial Sweeteners are NEURO TOXINS. They are NOT going to help you lose weight, in fact they are going to do just the opposite. Your body needs sugar and when it doesn’t get it, it does not process the artificial sweeteners in its place. You are actually poisoning your body. I took a very well known “All Natural” over the counter cold medicine/preventative for almost two weeks and nearly ended up in the hospital with poisoning because it contained artificial sweeteners. Did it do what it said it would, yep, but it was also poisoning me because I have a mild allergy to artificial sweeteners, which I believe is actually just my body’s way of rejecting something that is not good for me. I say mild allergy, only because, it gives me severe stomach problems, but does not send me to the hospital.

Artificial Sweeteners are in almost everything that you consume today. Any liquid or melt form of medication has it, children’s medications are the worst for having it. Toothpaste, mouth wash, dental floss, yep, you guessed it, they all contain artificial sweeteners. I have even been unfortunate enough as to learn that just because a product or company claims to be all natural, does not mean that it is. Often times they all have artificial sweeteners in them. There are even products that I thought were safe because they have sugar in them, but when I got down to the bottom of the ingredient list they also contained artificial sweeteners. I’ve also run into medications and products that when I bought them did not have the artificial sweeteners in them, but when I went to buy more they had changed the ingredients WITHOUT WARNING and now had them.

Please do your homework. Stop blindly following the crowd, and take a few minutes to do some research. I think you’ll be very surprised at what you will learn. Artificial sweeteners are not welcome in our home and I hope that there will start to be many other homes that they are not welcome in as well.

Have you found any liquid cold medicines without it? I am so disappointed to have to let go of my Nyquil, my chewing gum and etc. I really thought I was avoiding the stuff!!! My sister and I were talking this evening about artificial sweetners – she too has an alergic reaction to them. We were thinking this may be the cause of my frequent headaches.

I have yet to find any liquid medicines without it, but I haven’t checked at Whole Foods yet. The last time I was there, they had a sign up at the door that said that they do not carry anything in the store with artificial sweeteners. There are some chewing gums without it, just be sure to read the labels. They are getting tricky now by having both sugar and artificial sweeteners in many things, so they don’t have to label them as sugar free. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is causing your headaches. A good friend of mine gets headaches all the time and all she uses are artificial sweeteners, but she won’t listen to me, and she’s even a nurse!

I will be sure to post if I find any liquid cold medicines that are “safe!”

  5. Great post. I am always amazed at how blind people are about what they ingest and use in every day products. I would rather have something with sugar in it than a pile of ingredients I can’t pronounce and have no idea what they will do to me.

Found you on Mom Bloggers Follow Me Club. I’m following and looking forward to reading more.

I agree 100%. I get so angry when it doesn’t say “splenda” or “nutrasweet” somewhere on the front you I need to read through a zillion ingredients to find them on the back (zillion ingredients should make me toss it back too!)

    Hi there.
    Thank you for the follow.
I was just reading your posts and I found what you had to say interesting.
    Especially this one.
I’ve always known that those artificial sweeteners are bad news. And it drives me crazy because my father drinks at least one diet soda a day. He’s diabetic.
Ehhh. I’m not a soda drinker, but sometimes I will put sugar in my Hot Tea. Real sugar. Can’t stand the nasty after-taste of the fake stuff. Blah!

So I’ll be following you now too.
Kudo’s to you for home schooling.
I use to home school my daughters…until they got to be too much for me.

Thanks for the follow. I am now, diligently, following you as well.

  18. Liz says:

Thanks everyone! Yes, it is unfortunate that you have to work so hard in order to determine whether or not there are artificial sweeteners in something, especially now that there are so many different names for them! And as I mentioned, I’ve learned not to stop reading the ingredients just because it has sugar in it since many are now putting both sugar and the artificial stuff in them.
